Police Department
The Virden Police Department consists of 6 full-time police officers, and 3 full-time dispatchers and a full-time animal control officer. The Chief of Police serves upon the appointment of the Mayor and the approval of the City Council.
A 12-hour shift schedule provides 24/7 coverage throughout the year. The department also provides 24/7 police dispatching and enjoys a strong working relationship with other local departments, the Macoupin County Sheriffs' Department and the Illinois State Police.
The City of Virden is strongly committed to local law enforcement allocating the police department nearly one-half million dollars per year in its budget.
