In addition to city maintained facilities, Virden has many other outlets for recreation. Area bowling alleys provide opportunities for both league and individual bowling and nearby lakes allow for swimming, skiing, boating and fishing only a short distance from the city limits. Two golf courses are located within minutes of Virden.
Numerous other recreational activities are well within driving distance of Virden, including those in Springfield twenty minutes to the North and in St. Louis, ninety minutes to the South on I-55.
Municipal Swimming Pools
The City of Virden owns and operates a four pool recreational facility. The pools include a main pool, which has an average depth of five feet, an intermediate pool with an average depth of four feet, a diving well, and a wading pool. Red Cross certified lifeguards are on duty during all times that the pools are open.
The pools are located at Prairie and Finis Streets in Virden's Heaton (West) Park.
Hours of operation: Noon - 6:00 pm on Monday-Saturday and 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm on Sundays from late May until August. Private parties may rent the pools on selected evenings.
Additionally, a full schedule of Red Cross certified swimming lessons are available in June and July.
Costs: Adults - $4.00 / Over 50 - Free / Students (K-12 ) - $3.00 / Pre-school - $.75. Family passes available for $40.00. Phone 965-5711 during operational hours.
The City of Virden is proud of its Municipal Park System. Two city parks provide swimming, lighted tennis courts and baseball fields. An active baseball and soccer program is on-going for all ages.
