City of Virden Government and Organizational Structure
The City of Virden is governed by an aldermanic assembly comprised of the Mayor and eight council members. The Mayor is elected at large and two council members are elected from each of the city's four wards. The City Council establishes city policy and assigns the administrative and managerial responsibilities to each of the city's departmental supervisors.
The City Council maintains four standing committees that meet on a monthly basis to evaluate and recommend matters for official action before the full council. The standing committees are as follows:
- Administration,
- Finance,
- Public Works, and
- Police
Each departmental supervisor is responsible for preparing items for consideration by the relevant committees under the direction of the committee chairpersons. The Virden City Hall and the Water Department Office are located in the Virden Area Community Center at 101 W. Jackson Street.
